When the original Chestnut Canoe Company of Canada was producing canoes, one of its classic boat designs was the Ajax, and was also one of the iconic Bill Mason’s favourite boats. However, this boat was quickly and affectionately renamed the “Pal” by its owners, reflecting on just how fondly they regarded it. Nova Craft has reproduced the lines of the original Ajax, thus allowing modern paddlers to appreciate the paddling capabilities of one of the best general-purpose canoe designs ever made.

The Nova Craft Pal is best suited for flat water cruising on calm days, although will cope with a light crosswind as it sits low to the water. But does result a wetter ride when used in choppy, conditions and paddling through waves. The Pal is reassuringly predictable to paddle and has a strong secondary stability, which allows it to be paddled solo and edged if required. Designed to be used on open water, as opposed to tight, small watercourses, the Pal 16 tracks well, maintaining a straight-line easily and is efficient and fast when compared to other 16ft canoe models.
