All paddlers will have safety at mind when taking to the water. As a minimum, everyone should be wearing a well fitted buoyancy aid or lifejacket and be paddling within their limits given the conditions and location.
Most kayakers and canoeists will consider additional safety equipment as very important, and in some cases essential for a journey. Some safety equipment will require specialist training before it can be used, eg. The use of throwlines in moving water, or completing a VHF operators license. Other safety kit is more straightforward to use, such as a whistle or bilge pumps.
