British Canoeing

The national governing body for paddle sports in Great Britain.


The British Canoe Union was first formed in 1936. Then in 2000 they federalised to become the umbrella organisation covering the home nation associations in Wales (Canoe Wales), Scotland (Scottish Canoe Association), and Northern Ireland (Canoe Association Northern Ireland). With British Canoeing still being the membership body for England.


Joining British Canoeing (or the home nations associations) gives lots of membership benefits, including:

  • A British Waterways Small Boat License providing you with access to over 4,500km of UK waterways. (normally costing £53)
  • Combined Liability Insurance providing for legal liability cover following negligence, nuisance or trespass. Also designed to support Coaches deliver guidance and advice.
  • Latest paddler news and advice, including the ever popular Canoe Focus magazine.
  • Access to very good savings on individual or multi craft boat insurance. Covers canoes, kayaks and paddle boards.
  • Supporting British Canoeing’s Access and Environment Charter - Clear Access, Clear Waters - a campaign which sets out a vision to confirm access to the rivers and inland waters of England whilst protecting the environment.
