Badger Paddles Tripper - Open Canoe Paddle

Badger Paddles Tripper

A One Piece Wooden Ottertail Canoe Paddle

The Badger Paddles Tripper Ottertail open Canadian canoe paddle is hand-made and superbly designed & constructed from one-piece of Cherry Wood (as opposed to laminated paddles). The Tripper paddle is the best-selling ottertail model from Badger, and is very popular for solo or tandem paddlers and perfect for lake/loch paddling.

The Tripper canoe paddle is a traditional otter-tail shape, and in use has a smooth, quiet stroke and a mid-sized blade to suit a wide range of paddlers. The long blade shape of an otter-tail paddle is particularly effective in deeper water, where the whole blade can be submerged at the midpoint of the stroke. For those looking or a high-end Badger paddle for shallower water, the Badgertail would be more suitable.

Constructed from oiled Cherrywood, which is a close-grained hardwood giving a strong, light paddle with a nice, natural flex when pressure is applied. As with all Badger paddles, there is a dihedral transitional ridge along the spine of the blade. This provides strength and a smooth flow of water around the blade, resulting in fluid, smooth paddle strokes.

Each Badger Tripper comes supplied with a paddle sock to protect your wooden paddle against scratches and scrapes in storage or transport.

We are also able to source the ‘Forest Edition’ cherry Tripper paddles in the UK. These have a custom engraved paddle tree on the blade, to give a unique looking paddle. And for every one of these paddles sold, the ‘One Tree Planted’ organisation will indeed plant one tree in a tree planting project somewhere on the planet.

Paddle Maintenance

  • First prepare the wood by making sure it is clean and dry.
  • Sand where necessary and ensure the surface is free of loose particles and dust.
  • Apply oil with a clean rag*.
  • Use a fine sandpaper to “wet sand” using the oil for lubrication.
  • Let stand for a few minutes to allow oil to penetrate.
  • Wipe away excess Badger Oil, if any, with a clean rag then leave to dry for 12 hours.
  • *For larger applications, a brush, roller, or sprayer can be used
  • Repeat if necessary with the number of coats being determined by desired results, amount of use, and exposure to the elements.
  • Badger Paddles recommend a minimum of 4 coats on bare wood.
  • Drying time is approximately 24 to 36 hours.
  • Please allow 24 hours between coats.
